MANASSAS — Football fields are a common amenity at Prince William County middle and high schools.

But in a time when the county’s population continues to grow, and when there are fewer and fewer acres on which to build the new schools that are needed to keep up, what if they weren’t?

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY — Areas in Prince William County — including the area near Manassas, Dale City, Woodbridge, and Dumfries — are implicated as having a lower life expectancy in the metropolitan Washington region, according to a new report produced for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG).

The report, “Uneven Opportunity: How conditions for wellness vary across the metropolitan Washington region,” was conducted by the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Center on Society and Health.

LAKE RIDGE — For about 15 minutes prior to the start of the school day, it’s a frenzy outside Lake Ridge Elementary School.

Mornings at any school can be hectic, but here at Lake Ridge on Hedges Run Drive, children and parents are dropping off children at a side entrance to the school, resulting in children and their parents darting out in front of oncoming vehicles, drivers slamming on brakes and stopping in the middle of the street, car horns blowing, and drivers making illegal u-turns.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY — In her effort to keep the lights of shining on the issue of Route 28 congestion, the Virginia Delegate Danica Roem remains steadfast on removing them.

From Fairfax to Manassas, traffic lights, she says, are the bane of existence for commuters who use the road.

STAFFORD — Ferry Farm Elementary School will be getting a $10 million renovation.

The Stafford County School Board chose this option instead of rebuilding the school from the ground up. The School Board voted to start phase one of the renovation during a special called meeting on Dec. 4, 2018.

MANASSAS PARK — A growing number of drivers are parking their vehicles in Manassas Park neighborhoods. And, it’s becoming an issue city leaders must address.

“There’s only so much space,” said  Donald Shuemaker, a councilman on the Manassas Park Governing Body. “Our population is growing.”

Each month the Competitive Edge Athletic Performance Center selects an Athlete of the Month. The athlete for January is baseball player Cooper Ryan.

Ryan spends his time at Competitive Edge in Woodbridge working in the batting cages, doing agility exercises, and participating in camps. He is the pitcher for the 13U Competitive Edge Baseball team. In addition to pitching, he plays third base.

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY — Prince William County is well into its second phase of a pilot archery deer management program that began last year.

If it goes well, the program could become permanent. The pilot stage last year only operated at three sites for six weeks. This year the number of sites has increased to 10 locations and the time for the hunt has lengthened from October 6 to November 16 and then again from December 2 to February 28.

STAFFORD — The turnover rate at the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office has long been a problem.

“The turnover of personnel is a significant issue because deputy sheriffs receive basic, continuing and specialty training at a significant effort and cost to the county and the sheriff’s office,” Sheriff David Decatur wrote in an email to Potomac Local.
