Jim Kearns

James M. Kearns, Jr., 73 of Montclair, Virginia passed away at his home on February 14, 2017 with family at his side. He is now resting peacefully after a long struggle with prostate cancer. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, James and Lauretta Kearns and his grandson, Christopher.

Jim is survived by his wife, Kathryn Craig Kearns; his son, Jamie Kearns and wife Ann, and grandsons Ryan and Brady of Brunswick, Maryland; and daughters Kay Floyd and husband Pierce Blue of Alexandria and Sarah Higgins and husband Kevin of Alexandria; brothers Thomas, William, and Kevin, and sister, Karen Kearns, of New York City. Jim is also survived by many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Thomas Charles Vrtis of Woodbridge, Virginia (formerly of St. Charles, Illinois) passed away at home on January 28, 2017. He was 87.

Tom was born on December 24, 1929, in Oak Park, Illinois, the son of Charles and Anna (Kucera) Vrtis. He grew up in La Grange, Illinois, with seven brothers and sisters. After completing his elementary education at St. Francis Xavier School in La Grange and his high school education at Fenwick High School in Oak Park, Tom attended Loyola University of Chicago and graduated with a degree in accounting in 1951. Following college, he served two years in the United States Army as a 1st Lieutenant, and was stationed in Germany as part of the post-WWII allied occupation forces. After returning home, Tom joined the accounting firm Arthur Andersen, which would be the first stop in his lifelong work as an accountant in the Chicagoland area. (more…)

Speros D. Thomaidis

Lt. Col. Speros D. “Spatz” Thomaidis (USMC-Ret.) of Dumfries, Va., passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, on Jan. 27, 2017. Spatz, age 86, joins his beloved wife, Kiki Zaharoolis Thomaidis, brother Nikos D. Thomaidis and “adopted brother” George Romanos, all who predeceased him.

The son of Greek immigrants, Spatz was born during the Great Depression in Highland Falls, NY, where he learned to speak English at public schools and, as a child, worked and lived at his family’s business, The West Point Arms Hotel and Restaurant. He graduated valedictorian of his high school class and went on to earn a degree from Cornell University, where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
Spatz epitomized the term “Semper Fi.”

George Harrison Seymour 58, of Warsaw, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2017. He was a real estate broker and a member of Totuskey Baptist Church.

He is survived by his mother, Carmelita Herring Stansbury of Warsaw; sister, Pateresa Seymour Ferreira of Warsaw; aunt, Georgena Strawderman of Stafford; uncle, Ronnie Herring (Linda) of Wicomico Church; nieces, Roxanna Seymour (Dennis) and Amanda Ferreira (Mike) both of Woodbridge; great nieces, Jada and Jazlyn; great nephew, Jarell, and many cousins, extended family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, William Harrison Seymour, Jr.

Dolores Marilyn Walters (nee Wallin) went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 1, 2016. She passed away under Hospice care at her apartment at Potomac Place Assisted Living in Woodbridge, Virginia after a relatively short but steady decline in her health.

Dolores was born in Detroit, Michigan on October 22, 1932 to Eugene and Myrtle Wallin. She and her sister Avis Bowman, grew-up in the Grandale neighborhood of the City and attended Coolidge Elementary School and Mackenzie High School. In 1948 she married Robert I. Walters whom she had known for many years from the neighborhood and school.

Manassas journalist and photographer Bennie Scarton Jr., who celebrated his community in the long-running column, “It’s My Town,” died on January 1. He was 80.

His survivors include his wife, Ramona, whom he married the day after Christmas 57 years ago, and his two daughters, Tamara Scarton Morales, of Crofton, Md., and Kyra Scarton Newman of Glen Allen, Va. He is also survived by two sons-in-law, Paul Morales and Jon Newman, as well as four grandchildren: Matthew and Hannah Morales and Sarah and Zachary Newman.

Steven Jeffrey Lloyd, 59, of Goldvein passed away Thursday, December 22, 2016, at his home.

Steve was a gifted machinist, fabricator, and artist. In his earlier years, he owned a motorcycle shop where he built and raced high-performance motorcycles. He later worked for the U.S. State Department providing fire safety inspections at U.S. Embassies around the world. Steve also had a fabrication shop, working on government contracts building parts for flight simulators. For the last six years, Steve served as a machinist with Arlington County.
