Doris Holmes (Garretson) Gittin
Doris was a Campfire Girl leader for many years, impacting the lives of numerous young women and leaving many lasting memories. She loved being at the beach or floating in a lazy river, and enjoyed sign language, puzzles, Sudoku and coffee ice cream! Doris was employed by the Prince William County School system for thirty years and retired as Secretary of the Board in 1998. She spent her retirement years in Strasburg, Virginia where she enjoyed her home nestled at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Shenandoah Valley.
Nancy grew up in Manassas, VA, where she attended Bennett Elementary School from grades 1-7, and Osbourn High School from grades 8-12. During her high school years, Nancy was a Majorette and played the clarinet in the Marching Band.
Upon graduation in June 1956, Nancy married her high school sweetheart, Samuel B. “Sammy” Russell, who predeceased her on February 11, 2003. They were predeceased by the youngest of their five children, Samuel W. Russell, on April 21, 1984. Nancy was also predeceased by her oldest sister, Lillian (Hooe) Warren Hamilton on November 10, 2007.
