HAYMARKET — Sailors from USS Gravely greeted students and volunteered in classrooms at Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. Elementary School on students’ first day back at school for the 2018-2019 school year.

At the start of the school day, sailors lined up outside the building to greet families. They also handed out stickers to each student to remind them, and their teacher, if they were car riders, walkers or bus riders.

Armed Robbery – On August 27 at 2:25AM, officers responded to the Babylon Cafe located at 3081 Golansky Blvd in Woodbridge (22193) to investigate a robbery. An employee reported to police that he was approached by two unknown masked men, one armed with a handgun, when he opened the back door to the business. The suspects ordered the employee back into the business where they forced him to open a safe. The suspects took an undisclosed amount of money before tying the employee to a chair and fleeing the business. No injuries were reported. A police K-9 searched for the area for the suspects who were not located.

She reported this week that, since a decision made by China earlier this year to stop accepting used plastics for recycling, that waste has been piling up at the local landfill. 


MANASSAS — A new Mediterranean restaurant called Strofi is coming to Manassas. It will open in the Shops at Signal Hill on Liberia Avenue, across from Aldi.

Strofi owners Lidiia and Benan Aksoylu are a married couple with a desire to bring authentic Mediterranean food to Manassas. Benan is Turkish and explained that gyro, while typically seen in Greek restaurants here in the U.S., has its roots in a popular Turkish street food known as döner. He and Lidiia want to bring that same authentic dish to Manassas.
