STAFFORD — Rock Hill Supervisor Wendy Maurer will not be seeking re-election for her seat come November.
Maurer, currently serving her first term on the Board of Supervisors announced her decision during the Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 8 meeting.
STAFFORD — Stafford leaders nearly a year ago caused an uproar in the building trades when they tossed out all applications from developers that wanted to build “cluster” subdivisions in the county.
That move not only sparked lawsuits but also trigged an order from the Board of Supervisors to the county Planning Commission to redraw the map that shows where such clusters (where homes are built tightly together in an effort to preserve open space) would be permitted in the county. It was also tasked making new rules for clusters.
STAFFORD COUNTY — (Press Release) At 4:27 p.m. Thursday, the Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department responded to a reported water rescue on the Aquia Creek. The caller reported two teenagers, who had been paddleboarding since 6 a.m., on the water calling for help.
Due to strong winds and low tidal conditions, there was an extreme drop in the water level leaving the paddle boat stranded. The teens were approximately 150-200 feet from the shoreline.
STAFFORD — Ferry Farm Elementary School will be getting a $10 million renovation.
The Stafford County School Board chose this option instead of rebuilding the school from the ground up. The School Board voted to start phase one of the renovation during a special called meeting on Dec. 4, 2018.
MANASSAS PARK — A growing number of drivers are parking their vehicles in Manassas Park neighborhoods. And, it’s becoming an issue city leaders must address.
“There’s only so much space,” said Donald Shuemaker, a councilman on the Manassas Park Governing Body. “Our population is growing.”
STAFFORD – (Press Release) Mrs. Karen Bingham will assume the position of Assistant Principal at North Star Early Childhood Education Center.
Mrs. Bingham is currently the Assistant Principal at Conway Elementary School and has been in that role since 2017. She also served as the Assistant Principal at Rockhill Elementary from 2010 to 2017.
STAFFORD — The turnover rate at the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office has long been a problem.
“The turnover of personnel is a significant issue because deputy sheriffs receive basic, continuing and specialty training at a significant effort and cost to the county and the sheriff’s office,” Sheriff David Decatur wrote in an email to Potomac Local.
STAFFORD — (Press Release) Stafford Hospital, part of the Mary Washington Healthcare system, welcomed the first baby of the new year born in the Fredericksburg region.
Baby Jhkai Malcolm Obie was born just past midnight at 12:01 a.m., to Shakiyla Masond and Jerome Odie. He was greeted by a room full of family, friends, hospital nurses and his big sister, Ah’maya, 7 years old. This bundle of joy weighed in at 7 lbs. 8 oz., 20 inches long, with a beautiful head of jet black hair.
STAFFORD — (Press Release) On Friday, December 28, 2018, the Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department responded to a commercial building fire in the 900 block of Garrisonville Road. Several passers-by reported seeing fire in the area of the roof of the China Wong restaurant on Garrisonville Road.
They further reported that people were inside and workers were trying to extinguish the fire. The Stafford County Communications Center received the 9-1-1 call at 9:53 pm. The first unit arrived on the scene four minutes later and reported flames showing from the roof vent area of the restaurant. The fire was located inside of the business in the area of kitchen cooking equipment. Fire and rescue crews formed an aggressive attack bringing the fire under control at 10:24 pm.
