(Press Release) Colonial Forge, Mountain View, North Stafford, and Stafford High Schools earned recognition as Working in Support of Education (W!se) Financial Literacy Blue Star Schools for the 2018-2019 school year for their students’ outstanding performance on the W!se Financial Literacy Certification Test.

To receive this distinction, a school testing more than ten students must achieve an 80% passing rate on the “W!se” Financial Literacy Certification Test. Additionally, the school must have either a majority of students in a given grade level take the test, or have the students who took the test to achieve a minimum average score of 85%.


The power to remove Virginia’s controversial Confederate monuments has been denied to localities under the Dillon Rule, which allows the state to limit the powers of local governments. But a new Democratic majority in the state legislature may open the door to Confederate monuments in the future.

Virginia has 110 Confederate monuments, many of which are housed in Richmond, the former capital of the Confederacy. Among the most notable are the five towering monuments of Confederate leaders lining Monument Avenue. Others live in neighborhoods across the city from Church Hill to Bellevue. The city is home to significant Civil War buildings, including the American Civil War Museum and White House of the Confederacy.


The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office says a woman abducted her four children, and now the U.S. Marshals searching for her. A press release states: 

The investigation began in early June 2019 when a woman identified as Melody Bannister, 34, of Stafford informed deputies that her four children were being abused by a family member.


As Stafford County’s population booms, elected leaders on the Board of Supervisors and School Board are trying to work together to accommodate a surge in the student population.

With tension between the two elected bodies, getting new schools built and operational seems to be going at a slower pace than what the school board would prefer. 


Foodservice workers at George Mason University will get see an increase and pay and benefits. A press release states:

Over 200 Sodexo food service workers, cashiers, bakers, cooks, catering workers, utility workers, drivers and receivers at George Mason University have ratified their first-ever union contract with 32BJ SEIU.


Virginia State Parks are recruiting outgoing, adventure-seeking, hard-working people to serve as 2020 crew leaders in the Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program. A press release states:

Each summer, YCC engages 200 young people in state parks throughout Virginia, accomplishing projects such as trail maintenance, basic construction and beautification of the parks. Crew leaders manage these crews.


The effort to add a bring a Liberty Place to Downtown Fredericksburg, a building that will house new retail and restaurants, to include a new Mellow Mushroom pizzeria, will mean some traffic disruptions in the city. A press release states:

Motorists are advised of upcoming work zones and traffic pattern changes in the 600 block of William Street (between Douglas and Winchester Streets) associated with construction of the new Liberty Place development. On Tuesday and Wednesday, December 10 and 11, the right thru-lane and right side parking lane will be closed to traffic to facilitate the installation of new utilities under the roadway.
