When Virginia’s 2011 General Assembly session began Wednesday in Richmond, state legislators got a somber reminder about the shooting of Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
A letter from the state capitol’s Chief of Police, Kimberly S. Lettner, stated legislators should be mindful of their surroundings when in Richmond and to always report suspicious activity if they see it.
In a statement issued by the mall, officials say an increased demand for employee and customer parking, as well as the anticipated addition of several new retailers and restaurants in the coming year has driven the need to reduce the number of parking spaces commuters use each weekday by 75 percent from when commuter parking there was at its peak. Two men at 9 p.m. walked into the electronics store at 418 Garrisonville Road (Va. 610), showed a knife and taser and demanded the two male employees, ages 20 and 25, go the manager’s office.
The robbers threatened to kill both employees if they did not comply with their demands, and one the attackers used a taser to assault one of the victims while the other was kicked, said Stafford sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy.
Someone who lives on Markham Way, off Spring Lake Drive and Shelton Shop Road, called the sheriff’s department and reported several people standing on the street outside his home, about 11 p.m.
The deputy arrived and saw at least 50 people hovering around a man who was on the ground being beaten. The deputy jumped into the crowd, protected the victim, and was able to detain one of the men who appeared to be involved in the beating, said Stafford sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy.
Prince William County Public Schools will open two hours late.
Because of it, the National Weather Service now says we could see less than the original forecasted amounts of 2 to 4 inches – we may now see only a dusting of snow.
The good news, says our friends at NBCWashington, the freezing rain – which is far more dangerous than snow – should changeover to snow within the next hour and a half.
Washington, D.C. –– Changes are coming this spring for commuters who slug home from Washington to Virginia.
The changes will affect multiple stops where slugs (passengers who ride in cars of three or more occupants to use Interstate 395/95’s High Occupancy Vehicle lanes) are picked up each weekday afternoon, including one of the city’s busiest slug spots: 14th Street and Constitution Avenue.
Stafford County, Va. –– School officials in Stafford have invited parents to come review new textbooks that could end up in classrooms across the county.
The books up for review are math texts, technology education, music theory and choir, and family and consumer sciences.
