STAFFORD, Va. — School funding remains a hot topic in Stafford as officials are expected to approve the county’s proposed $247 million 2013 budget.

County administrator Anthony Romanello said the county government has offered the largest one-time transfer of local funds to the school system in history: $105 million, a 3.6 percent increase over last year.

Chances are, as you’re going through life, there are things that you’re going to want to do, see or accomplish. These goals often end up filed mentally in a, “bucket list,” for a time where you feel gutsy enough, or find the opportune time to check them off your list. NORTH STAFFORD, Va. — Work has begun to rehabilitate a bridge on Va. 610 in North Stafford at Aquia Creek, located west of the intersection with Joshua Road.

Daytime, temporary single-lane closures will be required initially as workers replace guardrail along the bridge, and reconstruct the shoulders. Motorists should be alert for flagging crews at the bridge directing traffic.

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — Joe Smith and Bob Jackson were best friends who liked to fish along the lakeshore. They were also known for having a few too many to drink, and when they didn’t come home to their families a call was placed to 911.


STAFFORD, Va. — Two more juveniles have been charged in connection to a school bus fire in Stafford County.

According to fire officials in Stafford, Spotsylvania County fire marshal’s assisted in the investigation that brought charges of vandalism, unlawful entry, conspiracy to commit a felony, and destroying a school bus by fire against the two additional juveniles. Officials have not provided an age of the suspects or said if any of the three suspects in this case live in Stafford County.

The filing deadline is approaching for those seeking election as a delegate to the First Congressional District Convention in Fredericksburg on Saturday, May 12 and to the State Democratic Convention on Sat., June 2 in Fairfax.


STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — A teenager was stabbed early Saturday morning in Stafford County.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the area of Theodore Street and Lyons Boulevard in the England Run subdivision at 12:19 p.m. for a report of a large fight that involved 16 people. Deputies surrounded the area and found teenagers fleeing the scene, and then stopped them to learn more about the fight, said Stafford sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy.


STAFFORD, Va. — Authorities said a car drove right into the path of oncoming traffic on U.S. 1, and then it was time to pull over the driver and see what was up.

The driver turned right onto U.S. 1 north from Jason Lane in Stafford, about 6 a.m. Monday. A sheriff’s deputy happened to be in the area and began following the car once he saw the driver ignore a stop sign at U.S. 1 and Jason Lane. The driver continued north about a half mile to Coal Landing Road.
