PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — It was 48 degrees at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in Prince William – far too cold for the opening day for public outdoor swimming pools in Prince William County.

Prince William’s six public swimming pools and two water parks were scheduled to open today, the first day of the Memorial Day weekend. But a message posted to the county’s parks website said cooler than average temperatures would force them to try again tomorrow:

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — The busy Memorial Day travel season has already claimed injury to a Virginia State Police Trooper patrolling in Prince William County.

Trooper R.D. Best was traveling on Va. 234 north on his police motorcycle when a Nissan Altima pulled into his path near Pinnacle Ridge Drive. The trooper was thrown from his bike after it collided with the car’s front end, said state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — “Immature,” “unfounded,” and “frivolous spending,” were some of the comments Mark Dudenhefer heard when he wanted to improve Stafford County’s antiquated roads.

In 2004, his 17-year-old daughter Emily was killed in a car crash on Mountain View Road. Nine years later, Stafford County celebrated the implementation of new road fixes following a $70 million voter-approved road bond passed in 2008. The very road on which Emily lost her life will be improved to help prevent others, including more than 400 student drivers at Mountain View High School, from being injured or killed in car crashes.

Saturday dawned gray and misty, but that did not deter over 10,000 girls and their families from participating in the bi-annual Girls on The Run 5K at Bull Run Park in Centreville. Families listened to DJ Alvin play tunes while getting green and pink hair color from the Hair Cuttery or face tattoos from smiling volunteers.

What started out as a robotics program in Prince William County has now spread to Arlington, Fairfax, and Loudoun counties.
