PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — The first prices for new homes in the Potomac Shores neighborhood near Dumfries are out today.
The developer of the 2,000-acre property, California-based SunCal, said the first home sites at the master planned neighborhood are now in development, and their design of the homes are meant to mirror styles seen in areas throughout the Mid-Atlantic region from South Carolina to Delaware, according to a company spokesman.
STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — It’s been dubbed the cradle of opportunity, and now those helping to plan Stafford County’s 350th Anniversary say the area is ready to welcome new visitors.
Stafford, founded in May 1664, will turn 350 next year. A series of events are planned to honor the sesquarcentennial, and a kick-off event was held Tuesday at Stafford Hospital to announce a list of parties to be held in 2014 to honor the birthday.
MANASSAS, Va. — A woman was raped by a man wielding a BB gun, police said.
It happened on Saturday after a 21-year-old woman from Manassas picked up an known acquaintance who directed her to drive to the area of Par Drive and Vint Hill Road in Nokesville. Once there, the man pulled out the gun – later determined to be a BB gun – and raped the woman, said Prince William police spokesman Jonathan Perok.
MANASSAS, Va — Water is rushing over the Lake Jackson Dam near Manassas at this hour.
It’s been a humid day full of heavy downpours and thunderstorms across the region. Now under a tornado watch, more thunderstorms are expected to impact the area during the late evening hours, according to the National Weather Service.
PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. — Steel beams from the ill-fated World Trade Center that have been sitting underneath a tarp for the past two years in Prince William County will be moved to Woodbridge to be preserved.
County officials say a public restoration effort to preserve the steel will begin in early July on the Sean T. Connaughton Plaza at the Prince William County Government Center. The effort is expected to cost upward of $75,000, and a company will be selected through an open bid process to complete the work.
A tornado watch is in effect for most of Virginia, including Prince William and Stafford counties, and the Greater Manassas area.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue to develop this afternoon into the overnight hours. In addition to tornadoes, the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy downpours, the National Weather Service states.
STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. — Water levels are rising at the Historic Port of Falmouth in Stafford County today. Because of that, the park along the Rappahannock River has been closed to the public until further notice.
It comes as another round of drenching rains are expected to fall today. The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for the entire region through this evening.
Mom on the Run
I have already had this conversation with Carlos, so I’m all set when he walks up to greet Dave, as Dave and I stand and chat between sets. It’s a regular weekday afternoon, and Manland – the free weights room at the gym – is bustling.
I think Prince William County / Manassas Boys and Girls Club Regional Director Glenn Vickers said it best at the Steak ‘N Stake awards dinner on Friday night – children in Prince William County and surrounding area will be out of school in in a week and they’re going to need a place to spend their summer.
As the weather gets hotter, for us reporters, that means covering more stories involving accidents, crime, and possibly even some unfortunate incidents involving children. But, as a product of the Boys and Girls Club, I know children who have their minds engaged, those who are involved, those who are active, and children who take an active role in their communities are more likely to have a more rewarding summer and are less likely to appear in unfortunate news stories. While there’s no scientific proof, its common knowledge children who are properly cared for do better.
