NOVA’s Associate Degree Project Awarded

Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) has been awarded a 2014 WCET Outstanding Work (WOW) award by the WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies.

The award honors colleges, universities and organizations that are implementing exceptionally creative, technology-based solutions to contemporary challenges in higher education. The College received the award for its innovative OER-Based Associate Degree Project, which is a comprehensive approach to addressing access, affordability and student success through the use of open educational resources.

Last week, those interested in knowing more about me as a candidate for Manassas City Council, my positions, and my vision for the city gathered at Okra’s Louisiana Bistro at the corner of Center and Battle in Old Town Manassas.

While there was plenty of good Cajun food, the main course was meaty discussion (sorry for the pun, it was tough to resist) about real issues facing Manassas City. My running for office, the whole campaign of “Ken Elston for Manassas City Council,” is based on my affection for Manassas. A vote for me is a vote for public safety, a vote for our public schools and a vote for economic development in the city.

Quantico Construction Projects On Tap for Winter Completion

QUANTICO, Va. — As the calendar draws closer to the start of its fourth quarter, two of the most prominent construction projects aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico are on schedule for completion.

Traffic relief will be a step closer too with next month’s scheduled completion of the Russell Road Phase II project, and Marine Corps University’s expansion is on tap for occupancy by Jan. 2.

WOODBRIDGE, Va. – On August 27, Narcotics Task Force officers conducted a search in Woodbridge and arrested four suspects. According to the report, officers found and removed cocaine, a cutter, and money.

DALE CITY, Va. – On August 27, someone told police that four children between 3- and 10-years-old were left alone during the day by the female suspect. According to the report, police discovered that the children would be left alone for long periods of time, leaving the eldest child in charge.

Bum Gun Used in Robbery Outside North Stafford Gas Station

STAFFORD, Va. – On August 27, a 51-year-old man, originally from North Carolina, was hospitalized at Stafford Hospital Center with non-life threatening injuries after being robbed at a Kangaroo Express on 34 Prosperity Lane in Stafford.

Major David P. Decatur said that deputies went to the Suburban Extended Stay Hotel where the victim was staying at located on 3097 Jefferson Davis Highway. The victim said that he was involved in a fight as he was bleeding from multiple places on his face and body, said Decatur. Between 10 and 10:30 pm, the victim went to the Kangaroo Express to put air in his tires and upon putting money in the air machine, someone approached him and shouted at him to empty his pockets, said Decatur.

Molotov Cocktail Found at City House

The City of Manassas Fire Marshal’s Office needs the public’s help with information about an incident on Aug. 11, 2014. At approximately 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 11, a resident in the 9600 block of Shannon Lane found a glass bottle on the front lawn of the residence. It appeared to be an incendiary device commonly known as a Molotov cocktail.

The glass bottle contained an unidentified liquid and a blue cloth, that was partially burned, inserted into the top of the bottle. Laboratory analysis is underway to remove fingerprints from the bottle, identify the liquid and the type ofcloth.
