The Christmas season gets underway this weekend on our area with the following events:
The Christmas Tree in Downtown Manassas will be illuminated at 6:30 p.m. The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. when Santa Claus arrives at the Manassas Train Depot. There will be holiday music at 6 p.m.

Prince William County Executive Melissa Peacor will hang it up after 30 years on the job.
Peacor is in charge of overseeing all operations of Prince William County Government. She reports directly to the Board of Supervisors.
Chuy’s will open inside the old Macaroni Grill in Woodbridge in January, and the Tex Mex restaurant plans to hire 175 workers.

The body of a woman found at Carver Cemetery in Stafford County was sent to a medical examiner in Richmond. Authorities are working to determine the cause of death, said Stafford sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy.
Authorities said foul play is not suspected in this case.

The Norfolk and Western “611” steam engine will return to Manassas for the annual Heritage Railway Festival in 2016.
The 65-year-old Class J steam engine was the centerpiece of the 2015 annual Heritage Railway Festival. The engine was fresh off of a restoration and on a statewide viewing tour when it rolled into Downtown Manassas.
Those coming aboard Quantico Marine Corps Base will have their IDs scanned beginning in January.
The new security measure comes as Quantico upgrades the equipment and processes used at the base’s entrance gates. A new system called RAPIDGate will be installed, and everyone entering the base — including visitors to Quantico Town — will have their IDs scanned with electronic security scanners.

A neighborhood street is closed in Woodbridge this morning due to two unity line breaks.
Kentucky Avenue, between Maryland Avenue and Alaska Road is closed to a water main and gas main break, according to Prince William police.
