This world premiere of Empathy is Elemental: The Musical! was inspired by a story that has its origins in Southeast Asian culture, specifically those surrounding Hinduism and Buddhism. “Garuda and the Elephant and the Tortoise” is a story that demonstrates the importance of empathy, compassion, and strengthen. Garuda is a half-human, half-bird creature and staple of Southeast Asian lore and mythology, known as the “King of the Birds.” He symbolizes supreme strength, courage, speed, and devotion. In the story, Garuda demonstrates these divine abilities and great empathy by separating the Elephant and the Tortoise who were fighting and saving the sages who lived on the branch and almost fell to the ground as they meditated.
Our actors have taken that story and truly, truly put their own spin on it. Instead of the Elephant & the Tortoise, think Fire & Water. You may not find a giant divine bird in our story, but you will get to meet some (magical?) forest creatures! There may even be an elemental fiesta or two. Regardless of our interpretation, we hope that the main point remains: Empathy is Elemental!!!
