Manassas City Public Schools (MCPS) announced that all schools will be closed on Monday, due to forecasted inclement weather.
The announcement, shared on the district’s official account on X, formerly known as Twitter, noted, “Manassas City Public Schools will be closed Jan. 6, 2025, due to forecasted inclement weather. Code BLUE for employees.”
Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA), the largest community college in Virginia and one of the largest in the nation, has declared a “Code Purple” for Monday, January 6, 2025. All classes and services will be conducted online, with no in-person operations at any of the college’s six campuses or satellite centers.
The announcement, made on X, formerly known as Twitter, stated, “All #NOVA campuses are operating virtually. Classes and services are online only.” The move impacts more than 70,000 students enrolled across the college’s campuses in Alexandria, Annandale, Loudoun, Manassas, Springfield, and Woodbridge.
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), the largest school district in Virginia and one of the largest in the nation, announced the cancelation of all schools and central office operations for Monday, January 6, 2025. The closure impacts over 180,000 students and approximately 200 schools and centers across the district.
The announcement was made via the school district’s official account on X, formerly known as Twitter. In addition to the closure of schools, all activities scheduled to take place on school grounds are canceled. This includes extracurricular activities, interscholastic contests, team practices, field trips, middle school after-school programs, professional learning and training courses, and recreation programs. Community use of school facilities by organizations unaffiliated with FCPS is also suspended.
Germanna Community College has announced the closure of all its locations on Monday, January 6, 2025, due to anticipated inclement weather. The announcement on the school’s website states: “Due to anticipated inclement weather, all Germanna locations will be closed on Monday, January 6.”
Serving more than 12,000 students annually, Germanna operates multiple campuses and centers across Virginia, including locations in Fredericksburg, Locust Grove, Culpeper, Stafford, and Caroline. The college provides a wide range of academic programs, including associate degrees, certifications, and workforce training, to meet the needs of its diverse student body.
Spotsylvania County Public Schools (SCPS) has announced the closure of all schools and offices for tomorrow, Monday, January 6, 2025. The decision, which affects over 23,000 students and 31 schools across the county, was shared on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Fredericksburg City Public Schools (FCPS) has announced that all schools will be closed on Monday, January 6, due to the impending winter storm expected to bring heavy snowfall and hazardous conditions to the area. “Fredericksburg City Public Schools will extend winter break by one day. This means all buildings will be closed on Monday, January 6. Tuesday, January 7, will be a staff workday. Students will report to school on Wednesday, January 8,” the statement read.

King George County Public Schools announced that all schools in the division will be closed on Monday, January 6, 2025, in anticipation of inclement weather. The announcement was made via X, formerly known as Twitter, citing concerns for the safety of students and staff.

Stafford County Public Schools (SCPS) has announced the closure of all schools and buildings for Monday, January 6, 2025, due to the forecast of snow and ice overnight. This decision also extends to canceling all activities and events scheduled for Monday.
SCPS, one of Virginia’s largest school divisions, serves approximately 31,000 students across 33 schools, including elementary, middle, and high schools. The division emphasized that safety remains the top priority, urging residents to stay off the roads if possible.
Residents across the area are preparing for a major winter storm that is expected to bring significant snowfall beginning this evening and continuing into Tuesday. The National Weather Service has upgraded Winter Storm Watches to Warnings, signaling potential snow accumulations of 5 inches or more in many areas.
