The American Heart Association continues its program to train 8,500 local residents in Hands-Only CPR by facilitating a Spanish speaking class. The Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Fire Department will host the event on Saturday June 20th July 1, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the following location:

Women In Community Action (WICA) recently held a reception for their 2015 academic scholarship recipients and their families at Hylton Senior High School in Woodbridge. All four recipients were chosen based upon their grade point averages, community service activities, and participation in school and community extracurricular activities. The scholarship funds will be sent directly to the universities of their choosing in the fall.
WICA was founded in 1976 in Dale City and currently has 20 members from Prince William and Stafford counties. Each scholarship is named after one of the founders such as The Deloris Hampton Memorial Scholarship; The Mary Williams Memorial Scholarship; The Fannie W. Fitzgerald Scholarship; and The Clara L. Harris Scholarship. Through the years, WICA has promoted academic excellence in our youth. The organization’s signature activity, which began in 1979, is the Debutante Ball which is held on even years for high school junior and senior young ladies. Some other activities of WICA have included youth mentoring, adopting a family in need, financially supporting college students in need, Action Through Community Service (ACTS), Project Mind-A-House, the Arts through CAPAC, providing holiday dinners to families in need, contributing to the local women’s shelter, Relay for Life Cancer Walk, the Teen Summit, and the Martin Luther King annual program.
The Town of Dumfries is now accepting applications for the 2015 Dumfries Summer Youth Internship Program. The 6-week program will provide an opportunity for our area students to get an in-depth, hands-on experience on the internal workings of Town Hall, as well as develop leadership skills through service based learning, earn money, and acquire business skills through hands-on training in a positive, engaging public service atmosphere. A joint work zone will be underway. The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office is closing the road to facilitate park cleanup and maintenance activities. At the same time, Virginia Department of Transportation crews will perform road maintenance, including sign replacement, mowing and brush removal.
The Historic Port of Falmouth will be closed the entire day on Wednesday, June 17, 2015. Stafford County personnel will complete several public safety and park initiatives. Staff will be removing substantial debris resulting from floods. To ensure the safety of the general public, the park and the section of the Belmont – Ferry Farm Trail from the entrance of the Historic Port of Falmouth Park to Shelton’s Cottage will be closed for the entire day.
“The park lies in a flood plain. It can flood several times a year. There are no particular floods…excess tree limbs and other debris on the river wash into the park,” stated Stafford County spokeswoman Shannon Howell.
On Saturday, June 13, more than 200 parents and children participated in the Prince William County Fatherhood Initiative’s first “Dad’s Play Day”, a community event to celebrate Father’s Day and encourage dads to spend more time with their children. The free event took place at the A.J. Ferlazzo Building in Woodbridge and included lunch, prizes and fun activities for dads and their children, including games like basketball, whiffle ball, an obstacle course, and water balloon toss, as well as activities like face-painting and arts and crafts.
Under the oversight of Social Services Director Courtney Tierney and Deputy County Executive Elijah Johnson, the Prince William County Fatherhood Initiative’s (PWCFI) mission is to empower fathers to do what is in the best interest of their children. Although the event focused on fathers and their children, mothers also attended and participated.
The event begins at 10:30 a.m. with player registration followed by a shotgun, team scramble at noon. On-course competitions include hole-in-one vacation giveaways on all par 3s and a 60-foot putt to win $1,000.
