Dumfries, Va. ââ While everyone else stood in amazement after a house in Dumfries exploded Monday, three neighbors led the charge to pull out a man who was trapped underneath the rubble.
A home under renovation at 19117 Wayne Drive exploded about 8:15 a.m.
When rescue crews arrived, they said there was a major smell of natural gas in the area.
Crews shut off the gas and quickly learned that not only was the gas the cause of the explosion, a man that had been inside the home had already been pulled out.
âWe ran in and yelled âis there anybody in there,â and we heard something so we said âman, you got to keep talking to us so we can find you,ââ said 22-year-old Jose Toro Ortiz.
He and two others, Elizer Ortiz Rodriquez and Gerry Glynn, who all live in the neighborhood, rushed into the demolished home after they heard the explosion and found the 45-year-old man still trapped inside.
The blast rocked the neighborhood, leaving windows on adjacent homes blown out, pieces of rood and wood on neighborsâ cars and debris in the street.
While inside the remnants of the home, Ortiz said he saw some boards move and thatâs when he knew someone was still alive.
âHey, we got him up here!â I shouted,â said Ortiz.
The three men pulled the victim from the rubble and helped him outside of the home.
Ortiz said man was dazed but was able to walk out of the rubble.
The victim was flown to a hospital with burns and trauma to his chest. Fire officials said he is expected to make a full recovery.
Ortiz said he didnât think much before taking action; it was just something he felt he had to do.
âI hope I did a good thing,â he said.

Woodbridge, Va. ââ On a bizarre night where nineteen men were left on base and the two clubs combined for only nine hits, the Potomac Nationals delivered when it mattered most in the bottom of the ninth and walked off with a 3-2 win against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
After the Nationals surrendered a two-run lead in the top of the ninth, Destin Hoodâs infield single sent Potomac to a win in their first home game in 17 days.
Both starting pitchers got in trouble early but escaped unscathed. Both clubs stranded two runners in the opening inning; Myrtle (15-9) left the bases loaded in the third against Danny Rosenbaum while Potomac (10-13) stranded a pair in the fourth. Both Rosenbaum and Barret Loux settled in during the middle innings; there would have been no baserunners in the fifth and sixth were it not for a catcherâs interference that put Destin Hood aboard in the sixth.
Potomac finally drew first blood in the seventh â and fittingly, it came without a hit. After Sandy Leon walked to open the inning, Jose Lozada laid a bunt down the third base line. Michael Olt barehanded and threw past first base to move runners to second and third. Trevor Hurley then fired a wild pitch to the backstop to score Leon.
The Nats doubled their lead in the eighth. After a Steven Souza double, Justin Bloxom laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt in his Potomac debut. J.P Ramirez then hit a hot shot to short that led to a 2-0 edge.
Myrtle tied the game when Jared Bolden hit a home run to right field with one out in the ninth. Joe Testa (2-0) came in to pitch the final out of the ninth and earned the victory. But the Nationals answered back in their half of the final inning.
Chris Curran singled with one out before Francisco Soriano walked. Jeff Kobernus grounded into a force out that moved Curran to third. Hood then hit a ball hard off Kennil Gomez (0-1) between shortstop and third to send the Nationals to the victory.
Potomac goes for the series victory Tuesday with Mitchell Clegg on the hill. Robbie Ross counters for Myrtle Beach at 11:05 a.m.
Will Flemming is the Director of Broadcasting for the Potomac Nationals.

Stafford County, Va. ââ A man was abducted a party Saturday, held at gunpoint, and then was able to find a sheriffâs deputy who helped arrest his alleged captor.
Stafford County authorities say a sheriffâs deputy was sitting in a lot off Warrenton Road (U.S. 17) in the southern portion of the county when a 19-year-old man walked up to him in tears and said he had just been held at gunpoint, robbed of his cell phone and then let out of the a car.
The deputy learned the two men had been at a party in Stafford County, and that while at the party the suspect stepped outside to make a phone call. When the victim went outside to where the suspect was to retrieve something from the car, the suspect ordered him into the car and sped off, said Stafford sheriffâs spokesman Bill Kennedy.

Lake Ridge, Va. ââ Occoquan Supervisor Mike May held his reelection campaign fundraiser on Sunday.
Known as âMike-O-D-Mayoâ because itâs held right before Cinco-De-Mayo, the event was the kick start to his bid to keep his seat on the Prince William County Board of Supervisors.
About 100 people came to the event to cheer on the unopposed incumbent who last week got high marks with conservatives when he was one of two county supervisors who voted against a higher tax rate for the county.
âI didnât just vote no on the proposed budget. I gave it some deep thought and analysis and came to the determination that we could have funded all of the budget initiatives, including construction of two new libraries, the two-percent county employee merit raises, fully funded the schools, added new police officers and new social services positions at a lower tax rate than that which was ultimately adopted,â said May.
Prince William Countyâs 2012 $890 million budget passed last week and takes effect July 1. It is expected to raise the average tax bill by $78, as it will tax $1.204 per $100 of the assessed property value.
May said his budget alternative would have taxed residents only $1.186 per $100 of the assessed property value.
âWe had a couple of different options: do you want to fund the county executiveâs proposed budget and see if it works out, or do you raise the tax rate higher than necessary to fund additional capital projects and positions this year? It makes more sense to wait to see how the economy plays out and then provide additional funding for projects next year if it improves. There are signs the economy is returning to normal levels but the signals are mixed, and the last thing we want to do is add new county positions only to come back next year and have to cut them because of budget shortfalls,â said May.
While residentsâ tax bills will increase, officials maintain that when adjusted for inflation they will be lower than previous years.
If reelected, this would mark Mayâs second term on the Board. He replaced current Board Chair Corey A. Stewart who represented the Occoquan District prior to May.
May, a practicing attorney in Arlington, was elected to the Board in 2007 and, since 2010, has served as the Vice Chairman of the Board.
Prior to serving as a supervisor, May served on the countyâs planning commission and Prince William County Social Services Board.
