To help Virginians protect their personal information and support neighbors in need, AARP Virginia hosts Fill the Bins — a free paper shred and pantry event.
Examples of documents for shredding might include bank statements, cancelled checks, credit card junk mail and receipts with identifying information. Each vehicle is limited to no more than three bags or boxes of documents; registration for this free event is required.
Among the millions of Americans who lost money to scammers in 2024, older adults suffered the greatest financial losses, according to data released by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The losses are astronomical: a record $12.5 billion was reported stolen through scams and fraud last year, up 25 percent from $10 billion in 2023.
Participants are asked to bring non-perishable food items to help stock local pantries and support neighbors in need.
“Food insecurity exists in every county and congressional district in the U.S.,” according to Feeding America’s annual Food Insecurity Report, Map the Meal Gap 2025 study. The key takeaways continue, “More than 12 million seniors and older adults experience food insecurity.”
Saturday, October 25, 2025, between 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 9325 West Street, Manassas, Virginia 20110.
A bonus for participants taking steps to declutter securely, all registrants will be entered for a chance to win a paper shredder to continue secure disposal habits at home.
