Updated 10:49 a.m. Manassas City Police said the shelter-in-place order tied to the shooting in the 9400 block of Wellington Road was lifted at 10:04 a.m. Police said Jennie Dean Elementary is staying on secure-the-building status for the rest of the school day. The department said the investigation remains active.
Police also released a photo of Marvin Grant and a video of the 9:30 a.m. briefing at The Shop Gym.
Manassas City Police are searching for a man they identified as Marvin Grant after a shooting Wednesday morning in the 9400 block of Wellington Road.
Police set a 9:30 a.m. press conference at The Shop Gym, 9311 Wellington Road, and told media to stage there.
The department’s Facebook alert, timed 8:36 a.m., said officers were responding to a shooting in the 9400 block. It described Grant as a light-skinned Black man, about 5-foot-9, with brown eyes and brown hair. Police said he may be driving a gray Toyota Camry or Toyota Corolla with temporary North Carolina tags. Anyone who sees him or the car should not approach and should call 911. Nearby residents were told to stay inside, lock their doors, and stay off the scene.
Scanner traffic, which police had not confirmed as of 9:21 a.m., put the call at 7:18 a.m. at United Rentals, 9415 Wellington Road. Scanner reports said at least three people were shot in more than one spot on and near the property, that two were taken from the scene with CPR in progress, and that the condition of a third person was unknown. The same traffic said the shooter left on foot and was last seen going down Ashton Avenue from Wellington. A later scanner update said three shooting victims had been transported, two with CPR in progress.
A city public-affairs official confirmed to FOX 5 that a shooting had occurred and gave no injury count. 7News reported police had not said whether anyone was hurt. 7News also reported Wellington Road and the Route 28 Bypass were restricted, and that Manassas City Public Schools had placed Jennie Dean Elementary in “Secure the Building” status. The school system said students and staff were safe and were being sent to Metz Middle School because the elementary school could not be reached.
The 9400 block is light industrial at the Nokesville Road and Route 28 interchange. Airgas, a welding and industrial-gas supplier, is at 9409 Wellington Road. United Rentals, an equipment-rental yard, is at 9415. Center Point Business Park is on Center Point Lane, just off the block. The Shop Gym, the media-staging site, is in the 9300 block.
