OCCOQUAN, Va. – Occoquan Mayor Ernie Porta used his latest Occoquan Radio Podcast to recap recent community events, recognize local award winners, and preview the town’s biggest weekend of the year.
Porta thanked those who attended the Celebrate Occoquan fundraiser for the nonprofit Visit Occoquan, held last week at the Mill Street Draft Garden. The event featured live and silent auctions and drew strong support from the community.
He also congratulated the team at Forever Young, located at 206 Mill Street, after the business was named Best Wellness Provider in InsideNoVa’s Best of Prince William 2025 competition. Owner Krista Becca earned an additional win in the Best Eyelashes, Eyebrows, Waxing category.
At its most recent meeting, the Town Council adopted an ordinance consolidating stormwater management and erosion and sediment control programs. Council members also passed a resolution recognizing Deputy Town Manager Matt Whitmoyer for his years of service. Whitmoyer is leaving the area.
Porta praised volunteers who came out over the weekend to remove invasive plants from town spaces, and he thanked VFW Post 7916 for holding its annual POW/MIA Recognition Day ceremony at Mamie Davis Park.
In the podcast’s history segment, Porta explained that Occoquan went by several names in its early days, including Occoquan Warehouse, Occoquan Forge, and Occoquan Mills, before the Virginia General Assembly officially established the Town of Occoquan in 1804. He noted that the technical process of laying out the town was not completed until early 1805.
Looking ahead, Porta encouraged residents to attend the Occoquan Fall Arts and Crafts Show, set for Sept. 27–28. He called it the town’s largest event and a critical economic driver for local businesses. More information is available at Visit Occoquan’s events page.
