MANASSAS PARK — Students and staff in Manassas Park are doing their part to fight hunger in their city.
Throughout the year, the city’s high school serves as the location used to distribute food to combat food insecurity in the community.
Called the “Family Market,” each month, the high school’s Medical Club, Beta Club, and National Honor Society students help to prepare hundreds of bags of produce for distribution and help carry heavier loads to cars, said Manassas Park Public Schools spokeswoman Deanne Perez.
The school serves more than 500 families.
The monthly events are made possible by student and staff volunteers as well as support from the Community Foundation, the Capital Area Food Bank, and the BELL Education Foundation. The Capital Area Food Bank spends $32,000 per year for the Manassas Park Family Market, said Perez.
The donations ensure the viability and sustainability of the market and enable the school division to provide families monthly food support.
This is the fifth year of the Family Markets which are held monthly throughout the school year. It has grown to incorporate local community support in areas of literacy, health, finance, clothing, and more.
Our next and final for the school year will be held on May 16, from 4-5:30 pm.
