A systems engineer from Occoquan was killed Friday in a plane crash.
Leonardo Ospina-Villada died after his small fixed-wing, single-engine plane crashed in Spotsylvania County at 7:40 a.m. Ospina-Villanda had just taken off from Shannon Airport in Fredericksburg.
Virginia State Police are investigating the crash and say the plane banked to the left and was caught by a wind which forced the plane to crash into the ground. The crash occurred on federal park property just outside the airport property.
Ospina Villada was the only occupant of the plan and was taken to Mary Washington Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The FAA and NTSB are also investigating the crash.
Ospina Villada described himself as a highly-motivated software and systems engineer knowledgeable in aviation and aviation systems. He had worked for the Fairfax County Government, and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in systems engineering with a concentration in aviation systems from George Mason University in 2017, according to his LinkedIn profile.
