Three hikers were trapped by rising tides in Woodbridge.
Prince William County Fire and Rescue crews were called to a trail in the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge in at 5:14 p.m. Sunday, April 4. The call went out for a water rescue, however, this time, there was no boaters in distress.
Rescue crews found three people on Deephole Point who were surrounded by rising water from the Belmont Bay.
“The tide came in and cut them off,” said fire and rescue Assistant Chief Matt Smolksy.
It’s unclear just how deep the water was when fire crews arrived.
It took over an hour to free the three people, added Smolksy No one was injured.
Operated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the refuge serves as breeding area for migratory birds and endangered species, an outdoor classroom to provide the public with educational opportunities, and recreational opportunities to include viewing the area wildlife, and photography.
