New appointments for Stafford County Public Schools

STAFFORD – (Press Release) The Stafford County School Board approved the following appointments on Tuesday, August 13, 2019, during a School Board meeting.

John Anderson, Executive Director of Facilities and Maintenance

Mr. John Anderson will assume the role of Executive Director of Facilities and Maintenance. Mr. Anderson comes to Stafford County from Kennesaw, Georgia, where for eleven years he served as the Assistant Vice President of Facilities for Kennesaw State University.

In that role he oversaw Facilities Services, Design and Construction Services, Planning and Sustainability, Environmental Health and Safety, Enterprise Risk Management, and Central Receiving and Distribution.

He led a team of over 200 staff, and implemented facilities master plans that supported enrollment growth as well as a major consolidation with another state university. Mr. Anderson previously served in another role within Facilities at KSU, as well as ten years as senior architect for Georgia State University. He holds both a B.S. and Masters in Architecture, both from Georgia Tech.

Dr. George Hummer, Executive Director of Special Education and Student Services

Dr. George Hummer has assumed the position of Executive Director of Special Education and Student Services. Dr. Hummer has served as a Supervisor of Student Services since 2015. Previously, Dr. Hummer was the Assistant Principal of Rodney E. Thompson Middle School. Dr. Hummer began his teaching career in Spotsylvania County.

As Supervisor of Student Services, Dr. Hummer worked with schools at all levels to support IEP, 504, SEC, and MDR meetings. He worked closely with Human Resources regarding staffing, particularly with the recruitment of new teachers. Dr. Hummer also provided budget oversight for the areas under his supervision.

Dr. Hummer earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Radford University. He earned both a Master’s degree in Special Education and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Mary Washington. Dr. Hummer earned his doctorate in Educational Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Assistant Principal at Edward E. Drew Middle School

Dr. Theresa (Teri) Lewis is the new Assistant Principal for Edward E. Drew Middle School. Dr. Lewis served as secondary education specialist in Arlington County prior to assuming this role. While in Arlington, she also served as an ELA specialist, interim elementary assistant principal, and supervisor of the Office of Minority Achievement.

She co-founded the Summer Literacy Academy, a program that engaged a cohort of middle school boys from marginalized groups in meaningful experiences with reading and writing. More recently, as secondary education specialist, she coordinated the middle school implementation of Academic Parent-Teacher Teams, a high-impact family engagement strategy that is linked to learning.

Prior to her work in Arlington, Lewis served as a tenured associate professor of secondary education at Towson University, where she was chairperson of the English education program and Director of the Teacher Academy of Maryland. She began her career as an English teacher at Charlottesville High School.

Lewis earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Spelman College, a Master of Arts degree in English and English Education from the University of South Florida, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Florida.

Kaitlyn M. Sokoly, Teacher & Learning Facilitator of World Language and Culture

Ms. Kaitlyn Sokoly has assumed the position of Teaching and Learning Facilitator for World Language and Culture. Most recently, Ms. Sokoly was a Spanish Teacher at Stafford High School. Ms. Sokoly began her teaching career at Brooke Point High School. Prior to assuming the teaching position at Stafford High, she taught with Prince William County Schools.

As a teacher at Stafford High School, Ms. Sokoly was a member of the Curriculum Development Committee and the Professional Learning Community for Spanish Teachers. She served as World Language Department Chair for two years and was a member of Skillful Teacher Cohort #20.

Ms. Sokoly earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Adolescence Education and Spanish from the State University of New York College at Oneonta. She earned her Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Mary Washington.
