High school robotics teams championship starts Friday

FAIRFAX — (Press release) The 58 best high school robotics teams from Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. will compete in the FIRST Chesapeake District Championship at George Mason University April 12-13, 2019.

This is STEM-education at its loudest and most enthusiastic: hundreds of sharp kids and a crowd of fans to cheer them on.

The teams (34 from Virginia, 20 from Maryland and four from D.C.) earned their spots at the District Championship during seven qualifying rounds across the region in March. Most of the teams are affiliated with high schools. Some are sponsored by family and community groups.  The teams have diverse levels of experience. Two Maryland teams in this year’s District Championship are rookies; some teams in the contest were founded in 2000.

Top finishers this weekend will win places at the FIRST Championship presented by Qualcomm in Detroit, Michigan, April 24-27, and will face the best and brightest robotics teams from around the world.

Today’s event will take place at George Mason University’s EagleBank Arena, located at 4500 Patriot Circle in Fairfax.
