Child inside car abducted after mom runs into store

WOODBRIDGE — On April 6 at 2:25 p.m., officers responded to the 13400 block of Jefferson Davis Highway in Woodbridge to investigate an abduction.

The victim, a 31- year-old woman, told police that she had left her sleeping 2-year-old child in her locked car with the engine running, just outside a nearby business in order to go inside without disturbing the child. After being in the store briefly, the victim observed her vehicle, a Toyota SUV, being driven away with her child still inside, states a Prince William police spokeswoman.

The police were contacted and responded to the scene. Patrol officers circulating the area recovered the vehicle and the child within a short time. The child was not injured during the encounter.

An undisclosed amount of money was taken from the vehicle. The suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction prior to police locating the vehicle. The investigation continues.
