Update: 4 p.m.
At 11:50 this morning, fire and rescue units responded to the Target store located at 2460 Prince William Parkway for a reported structure fire. When units arrived, they discovered a fire inside the store and proceeded with evacuation of the building and primary search in conjunction with suppression operations.
After the fire was extinguished, fire investigators were able to determine the fire was caused by a heat gun that was unintentionally left unattended on a work bench in a small maintenance room. Fire investigators classified the cause of this fire as accidental.
No injuries were reported.
The preliminary damage estimate from the fire is $15,000.00. Smoke damage is currently being assessed and will likely cause this loss estimate to increase exponentially.
The fire sprinkler system did activate and help control the spread of the fire. During the early stages of the fire, store employees deployed portable fire extinguishers in an effort to control the fire.
Store managers have closed the facility for further assessment and clean-up.
Representatives from the Health Department are currently on the scene performing a health and safety assessment.
