Hyland to hold waste facility meeting

Fairfax County’s Energy Resource Recovery Center in Lorton is up for grabs, but one official says it will cost too much to buy it. (Fairfax County)

Lorton, Va. –– Just who will own the Waste-to-Energy facility in Lorton? County taxpayers or a private company?

That’s what Fairfax County Supervisor Gerry Hyland will discuss at a meeting to be held at 7 p.m. Thursday January 27, at South County Secondary School in Lorton.

Since the facility began operation in 1990, Fairfax County has leased the facility to a private company, but that lease is running out.

Some county officials say it’s a good idea to buy the facility and maintain it, because it concerts waste into energy that can power up to 75,000 homes.

Other officials say the $418 million price tag is much too steep, and that it’s one expense the county shouldn’t have to burden.
