Lorton, Va. –– It will be a day of service Monday for volunteers looking to raise awareness of the dangers of house fires.
Voluntters will gather at 9 a.m., on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, in several locations in the area including the Lorton Volunteer Fire Department and Dumfries Town Hall. From there they will canvass surrounding neighborhoods and distribute free information on how to prevent house fires.
The event will last until 2 p.m., and it marks the third year in a row the American Red Cross National Capital Region and Hope worldwide have sent volunteers to distribute the information.
Of the multiple disasters the Red Cross is called to each year, 94 percent of them are house fires, said Red Cross National Capital spokeswoman Cheryl Kravitz.
