Victim ID’d, burglaries probed, crasher charged

Victim identified
The pedestrian struck and killed in Mt. Vernon on New Year’s Day has been identified as 58-year-old Marino Sorto-Reyes, of Alexandria.

Sorto-Reyes was killed after being struck by a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee as he was trying to cross U.S. 1 in the area of Janna Lee Avenue.

Police said the victim was not using a crosswalk. No charges have been filed.

Lake Ridge burglaries
Police are investigating a series of burglaries in Lake Ridge.

A neighbor called police about 4 p.m. Tuesday and said a group of white males, in a boxy-style car, were breaking into houses along Colby Drive.

Police were dispatched but made no arrests. Now investigators believe the incident may be linked to other area burglaries that took place over the weekend and on Monday, reported InsideNoVA.com.

It appears burglars made off with a combined $21,250 in jewelry in burglaries in the area since Dec. 30.

DUI charge for community center crasher
Remember that car that crashed into a community center at an apartment complex in Lake Ridge on Sunday? Now the driver faces Charges.

Gregory Brian Carpenter II, 22, of Montclair, is charged with DUI following the incident.

Police say he failed to stop his 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo at a stop sign in the neighborhood, jumped the curb, struck two small trees and plowed his car into the center.
