Sheriff gets money back for illegal residents

Fairfax County, Va. –– Fairfax County will be reimbursed some of the costs it incurred jailing documented aliens.

The U.S. Department of Justice said Friday it would give the county $603,472 for some of the salary costs that come with incarcerating the known illegal residents, according to a county press release.

Fairfax County’s sheriff’s department, which processes the immigration status of those who have been arrested, was one of 865 departments in the U.S. that received funds from the Justice Department.

The funds come from the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program, which was set up to promote public safety, according to the press release.
