Ft. Belvoir –– The National Museum of the Army planned for Ft. Belvoir will have to undergo a mandatory public hearing.

The 177,000 square foot building is slated to be built on a portion of the a golf course on the military garrison, but plans for the museum will have to be reviewed before the center is built.

The building would have multiple levels, a lobby and reception area, exhibit halls, a theater, food services, a learning center and offices, according to Ft. Belvoir spokesman Donald Carr.

The golf course would be reconfigured, and three holes on the course would be located. Plans for the relocation and construction of the museum are available on Ft. Belvoir’s Web site.

Ft. Belvoir won out over seven other sites in the U.S. that were considered as a location for the museum.

When constructed, it will join a growing number of faculties in the Potomac Communities that are dedicated to military history, including the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle and the planned American Wartime Museum in Dale City.

Comments about what environmental impacts the changes to the golf course will be reviewed by base officials.
