Police probe kayaker’s death

Kayaks for rent at Belle Haven Marina near Alexandria.

Fairfax County, Va. – Police want to know how a man went missing and later died in the Potomac River.

Dive teams found the body of Kenneth E. Huggins, 46, of Suitland, Md., after he went missing at 11:36 a.m. Saturday while kayaking off Belle Haven Marina in Fairfax County.

Higgins’ body was found about a mile south of the marina about 3 p.m. Sunday, near Dyke Marsh, according to a Fairfax police spokesman.

Investigators are looking into the circumstances of his death.

After a 911 call about the missing kayaker was placed, rescue crews arrived to the marina to find Huggins’ 19-year-old nephew who was kayaking with him on the shore, said a Fairfax police spokesman.

A search was launched for Huggins, but was called off about 8:30 p.m.

Dive teams returned to the area at 7 a.m. Sunday, this time working a recovery mission aimed at finding Huggins’ body.
