MT. VERNON, Va. – It was a long night for power crews as they worked to restore 588 customers who were without electricity in Mt. Vernon.
Though power outages were rampant across Northern Virginia following Sunday afternoon’s severe thunderstorms, the Mt. Vernon outage was confined to an area off U.S. 1, on Buckman and Russell roads.
The storms that knocked out power in the area rolled through between 4 and 6 p.m. Sunday, but it wasn’t until 11:47 a.m. Monday that crews had the electricity back on to the affected 588 customers in Mt. Vernon, said Dominion Virginia Power spokeswoman Le Ha Anderson.
Those customers were just part of the 94,000 in the region who lost power after the storms. Crews worked through the night and restored 81,000 customers, but many in western Fairfax and Loudoun counties without power.
“These storms were powerful, and strong wind gusts they brought knocked down trees onto power lines and in some cases knocked down utility poles in remote areas that all had to be replaced,” said Anderson.
Dominion told customers who were still without power Monday afternoon that it could be Tuesday before service is restored.
